Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade
Ethereum平台自2015年推出，發展至2020年是屬於Ethereum 1.0版本的階段。
Ethereum 2.0是一個大型Upgrade， 2020年12月剛完成了Ethereum 2.0的Phase 0，是結構性改變的開始。

現今Ethereum平台的缺點仍然令使用上帶來不便，包括System Performance限制，及gas fee費用不穏定，尤其在系統出現’大塞車’情況之下，gas fee大幅上升。
Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade相信可以有效改善以上問題，Ethereum 2..0 Upgrade主要包括：
- Proof of Stake (POS)共識機制
- Sharding碎片化
從POW到POS的共識機制
Proof of Work (POW)是從Ethereum開始推出就使用的共震識機制，和Bitcoin所使用的共識機制類同。Miner鑛工使用電腦，透過鬥快解決覆雜數學問題，得到獎勵即發掘出Ether，與及認證交易和更新記賬所得到的交易費用。所付出的代價是設置高性能電腦和高電費支出。
Proof of Stake (POS)，把32粒Ether以太幣放到Deposit Contract Address，這個過程稱為Staking，成為一個Validator驗證者，認證交易和更新記賬，收取Ether作為回報。其中省卻解決覆雜數學問題一歩：
- 等於降低了高電費支出門檻，更多人可以參與Validator，增加整體Ethereum平台能力。
- 更多人參與，做到更加去中心化。
- 減少電力消耗，更加環保，可以持續發展。
- 這個方法便有一個聰明之處，存入POS的Ether被鎖定（直至Phase 1.5完成），等於參與者成為更長線持有Ether的持份者，投下信心一票，更加關心並維持Ethereum平台的長遠運作及發展。
- 減低如51%攻擊的機會，因為需要控制Staking的Ether的資本巨大。
Blockchain的Sharding碎片化
Sharding是來自Database Sharding的概念，是把一個巨大的Database分割成多個較小的部位。
Ethereum 1.0 只有一條Blockchain。
Ethereum 2.0：
- 開始階段有64條Shard Chain的Blockchain，每一個Node只需要處理其中一條Shard Chain，要處理的Data數量少了，降低了使用高性能電腦的門檻，更多人有機會參與成為Validator，可以做到更加去中心化，更加安全。這個改善可以由每秒15個交易，提升到每秒1,000個交易（加上Layer 2 Scaling，包括Rollup，支持每秒100,000個交易）。原來的Blockchain會成為64條Shard Chain的其中一條。
- Beacon Chain是一條如作為中央控制的Blockchain，去協調下面64條Shard Chain，隨機地分配validator去64個Shard Chain。
Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade階段
- Phase 0 - 建立Beacon Chain，開始POS共識機 制，此時在Ethereum平台，POS和POW並存。在2020月12月已經完成此階段。
- Phase 1 - Sharding，建立63條Shard，使用POS共識機制，預計大約2021年或之後完成。
- Phase 1.5 - Docking，原本Ethereum 1.0 的Blockchain連接到Beacon Chain，成為64條Shard Chain中的其中一條。此Blockchain亦由POW轉為POS共識機制，之後只有POS，不再有POW。預計大約2021年或之後完成。
現在Ethereum平台只可以處理大約每秒15個交易，成為很大限制。到完成整個Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade和Level 2 Scaling，可以大幅提升系統能力，支持大約每秒100,000個交易，這個大約是現在Visa網絡能力的2.5倍（現在Visa處理每秒42,000個交易）。
之後Ethereum 2.0還有Phase 2，關於EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) / Ewasm (Ethereum WebAssembly)，容後再談。
結語
如果每天看着圖表，看着價升價跌，其實感覺虛無。大升完大跌，尤如原地踏步。
Bitcoin是自2009年誕生，同樣經歷過大升大跌的過程，不過之後出現一頂高於一頂走勢，再創新高。
相信背後是有一點獨特的東西，值得去研究，相信就是加密貨幣背後的Blockchain技術。
在研究Ethereum的時候，令我想起過去看到Linux和Java的發展，同是建基於Open Source模式的發展，多少有一種豁達者的心態。Linux和Java對於過去互聯網的發展，有着功不可沒的地位。
Ethereum的始創人Vitalik Buterin，對Ethereum有十分遠大的願景，不單單是一種加密貨幣和Blockchain技術，而是一條通往未來Decentralized Internet的道路，或稱為Web 3.0。
科技是會向前的，Ethereum 2.0將會是在Blockchain發展上一個重要的里程碑。

I believe the dominant players in the world of blockchain are clearly visible now as well. Bitcoin represents a bigger market capitalization than every other blockchain combined and appears to be on track to become the preferred digital store of value. Likewise, Ethereum has more developers than every other blockchain combined, and is similarly on track to becoming the preferred economic infrastructure for the next generation of developers. At the same time, companies like Aave, Binance, Coinbase and Compound Labs are busy staking out the high ground in this ecosystem around specific value propositions.
The most astonishing aspect about market leadership in technology is how little it depends on the technology itself. There is always something better out there. The strength of the platform may have started in the technology, but in the end, it is much more driven by the total investment, the installed base and the developer community.

In nearly every case, they will cite the low penetration of the technology in their industry or market as evidence that it’s “early days yet” and they have “plenty of time” to formulate their strategy and leverage their legacy market position. It isn’t. They don’t.
